Why is Facebook’s Organic Reach Decreasing And What This Means For Businesses

In June 2014, Facebook announced that it has decided to show less of businesses’ updates in user’s News Feeds. This decision has caused businesses to go into turmoil as their social media strategy will not be comprised of “post whatever you find interesting on your business’s Facebook page.”

According to Facebook, out of the over 1500 posts that could appear in a single user’s News Feed in a day, only 300 are selected to be shown so as to keep the content interesting and relevant.

There are over 30 million active small business Facebook pages. These small businesses do not have the means – the marketing strategy or budget – that major brands do.  In Facebook’s eyes, these businesses’ posts are not healthy for their user’s News Feed, as it can be considered spam, so it has taken further action to give these posts less exposure.

By setting such a high standard for what kind of posts gain exposure, Facebook has caused business owners to say that “organic reach has been frustrating, but it’s pushed [us] to set a higher bar, a higher standard for the content [we’re] posting.” This decision has also created businesses to post only engaging content, not just whatever they think may be interesting to their fans. Brainstorming and writing content will now have to be hand-selected and looked over several times.

For Facebook users, there are a few ways to help your favorite local businesses.

Facebook has made it harder for you to show your interest in businesses. When you like a page, you might think that you are effectively letting Facebook know that you are interested in the subject matters of the page and the posts that will be uploaded; however, it takes two more steps to make that happen. First, when you “like” a Facebook page, you need to click the arrow to show the drop-down menu and check “Get Notifications”. Second is by reacting and interacting with the page’s posts. Liking and commenting is considered activity to Facebook, and the higher your activity and interaction with the page, the more exposure you will receive from the Facebook page.

According to a recent report from Demand Metric and Netbase, social media analytics tools are valuable to marketers because they allow marketers to track campaigns, analyze brands, and gather competitive intelligence. This report was based on the responses of 125 marketers.

In the graph to the left, the top three reasons are shown. The top three reasons, as said before are campaign tracking, brand analysis, and competitive intelligence with 60%, 48%, and 40%, respectively.

This report contained other findings as well. The most valuable insight that social media analytics provided is by far engagement. The graph on the right makes this very apparent as engagement is the only factor that is green.

The last picture shows that social media analytics has only become prevalent since 2012, because 53% of marketers using social media analytics tools started using them in 2012 and 2013. Currently, 61% of the marketers surveyed use social media analytics tools.

Social media analytics tools are becoming more prevalent as marketers are realizing that social marketing and its strategies are the key to their brand’s future success. There are a variety of social media analytics tools that use their own formulas to provide the most accurate data for marketers and their teams to analyze. If you want to become one of the marketers that are taking a quantum leap forward, look into social media analytics tools.

Benefits of Social Media Marketing

According to the 2014 Social Media Marketing Industry Report by Michael A. Stelzner, there are many benefits when it comes to social media marketing. Some of the benefits include improved sales and search rankings, generated leads, and grown partnership; however, the two main benefits of social media marketing are increasing exposure and increasing traffic. Since the 2013 Social Media Marketing Industry Report, “marketers reported increased benefits across all categories [exposure, traffic, loyal fans, marketing insight, etc] since 2013.”

In the chart above, the results of the survey can be found. As stated previously, the top two benefits of social media marketing are increased exposure and traffic with 92% and 80% of marketers, respectively, believing that social media marketing has brought these results.1

Why Is It That Marketers Have Seen These Results?

To tackle this question, we must delve into the basics of the situation.  There must be an audience for marketers to campaign for and to advertise their brand, product, or service. This audience on the Internet has been growing. As of July 1, 2014, the growth rate of Internet users since 2013 hit 7.9% bringing the number of Internet users to 40.4% of the world’s population. Internetlivestats.com has projected the number of Internet users to reach 3 billion by the end of 2014.2 That is a large audience. In Korea alone, 50.4% of Internet users use social networking sites (SNS), according to the Korea Internet & Security Agency. Of these 50.4%, 87.7% check SNS at least once a week. With the ever-increasing size of the targeted audience, marketers are looking to develop loyal fans, generate leads, increase traffic & exposure, and more.3

What Other Lesser-Known Benefits Might There Be?

Being ahead of the curve in any aspect of marketing and business is a huge benefit, especially in a field that is going anywhere but down in the future. Social media has become a crucial part of people’s lives and it’s not looking to leave its position anytime soon. Being ahead of the curve gives marketers a competitive advantage over those who have not started implementing social media marketing into their business plans. Those who have not or are not willing to use social media marketing are missing out on a huge medium to a large target audience.4

A marketer should always look for ways to gain a competitive advantage or stay ahead of the curve because in business, those who fall behind usually stay behind. The marketing industry is a very grueling marathon and little advantages such as creating a structured social media marketing plan will prove to be of great use in the long run.

What is Social Media Analytics?

Social Media Analytics (SMA) has been introduced as a way to make business and marketing decisions from social conversations. SMA, such as sentiment analysis and text mining, allows marketers to single out valuable information from conversations happening on the web and incorporate it into their business plans. SMA isn’t limited to only social networking sites, it is also available for document collections that can be found on the Internet, blogs, and more. In the current state of marketing and social media marketing, SMA is a crucial part in taking the big step to improving marketing decisions based on customers’ needs and opinions.

Why is SMA Important?

In the social era, it is obvious that many people will be using social network sites. In a recent survey carried out by the Korea Internet & Security Agency, results showed that after search engines, people in Korea used social networking sites the most. Chart 1 shows that 50.4% of people in Korea use social networking sites. Chart 2 shows that out of these 50.4%, 87.7% use and check social networking sites at least once a week. This is a considerable amount of customer opinion that can be mined and a considerably large audience to target.

<Chart 2: isis.kisa.co.kr>

SMA shows what is going well and what isn’t; however, what makes SMA so important is that it shows what is going well or badly based on customer opinion. This is the key factor of SMA as it is the goal of marketers to satisfy their customers. Not only does using SMA help marketers figure out what’s working and what’s not, it also helps in estimating ROI. ROI is not an easily calculated measurement. SMA, however, makes it a little easier. How, you may ask? Certain tools show which social platform “leads” come from and this “lead” can be given a value based on which product or service is being sold. Lastly, SMA helps marketers to be more efficient. Suppose a marketer is spending all of their day checking social network news feed streams, such as Facebook and Google+, and news sites for potential leads and feedback. This time is better spent on other activities due to text and opinion mining solutions that make up an SMA tool. All in all, SMA solutions will help marketers find success and it is even more worth the cost if time and money are already being allocated into social media.
